![]() Every day I skim this stinky stuff off the top of my pickles. They are just starting to have an odor. Should be done in two days. I can't wait to get them off my counter!

I really enjoy reading your blog. Three years ago I did 14 day sweet pickles (like the old Virginia Chunk recipe) and I had that scum on top. My mother-in-law said it was normal and just skim it off, so looks like your pickles are working true to form. Plums already? Ours aren't ripe yet. My pears won't be ready until the first hard frost.

Yesterday was the big day for the pickles to be done but I have more time to deal with them Thursday night so I thought I'd let them sit a few more days. The recipe said at least 2 weeks so a few more days probably won't hurt anything. We'll see.
